About Standoff
Standoff, later to become Stillsuit was a highly influential band in the New York hardcore scene. They were a bridge between bare bones skeletal hardcore punk and what was to become later known as post-hardcore. Originally released in 1991, the three song demo garnered a lot of attention, which resulted with the band being signed to Wreck-age Records and releasing the cult classic "Green Spock Ears" 7 inch. The success of the 7 inch got the attention of TVT records, which released their full length album "At The Speed of Light" under TVT subsidiary Building records. But before all of this there was the demo. Recorded and mixed by the late Eddie Sperry, an extremely talented and diverse musician and producer, the demo captured the bands raw energy without sounding too raw or processed. The demo quickly made the rounds of the hardcore scene, and people starting taking notice. The warm and machine-tight rhythm section of Dimi Douvas and Manny Carrero, layered with the innovative and blistering guitar playing of Orlando Arce, allowed Vocalist Julian Vasquez to bring his high energy singing style together to create a truly original sound. The band was short lived but their influence remains. Lots of bands that came after owe a debt to the inventive sound of Stillsuit. The demo captures the archetypal approach of the band in their early stages. There was no band at the time that sounded like Stillsuit. While you could hear the influences from earlier bands in their playing, what they created was new and refreshing, especially in a genre of music where energy and power often overshadowed innovation and songwriting. The demo will be available for download on October 20th in digital format, and on cassette in a very limited capacity. This is definitely something every hardcore fan will want in their collection.
